Choose the right Wedding DJ!

The GQ Events DJ’s in Erie, PA, we know a thing or two about music and weddings, but what we know must of all is when it comes to your wedding day, everything has to be perfect. The perfect venue, the perfect dress, the amazing food… Everything! However, there’s one piece of your wedding day that ties everything else together and that’s finding the right DJ. As your guests come together to celebrate, your wedding DJ becomes the key to moving everything along smoothly from one moment to the next, Its a "flow". It’s not just about finding someone that can play background music. It’s about finding the perfect match for your style and having someone you can trust to entertain and create the perfect setting for your special day.

We’ve put together a list of things you should consider when you’re looking for the perfect wedding DJ in Erie, Pennsylvania. Trust us when we say, a DJ can make or break your perfect day, so it’s important to make sure you do your homework and get it right.

1. Make sure your DJ has a personality and style that matches how you envision for your wedding.

A wedding DJ sets the tone for your reception. Remember, this will be the person that is speaking to the crowd and managing the events (Or at least managing the transition from event to event) throughout the evening. How they talk and act, and the kind of person they are is actually a really big deal; personality matters. Are you looking for an over the top party DJ for a night of unforgettable fun, or are you looking for more of a laid back and cool DJ that will entertain, but not be in your face quite so much? You can’t determine these things through email or text, and you probably can’t even determine this through a phone call. It’s best if you and your fiancé can meet with the DJ in person to get a feel for their style of DJ’ing, their choice of music and yes… even their personality.

2. Make sure your DJ is a great announcer.

Announcer isn’t the sexiest word in the world, but it’s a pretty accurate description of what a good DJ will be doing. He/she will be encouraging couples to participate and dance, announcing the newlyweds first dance, gathering the crows around to cut the cake and much more! Their ability to articulate and guide the guests and events is extremely important.

3. Make sure your DJ interacts with guests and keeps everyone involved at ALL times.

A good DJ isn’t someone that just plays good music. A good DJ is someone that understands how to read a crowd and read a room. It’s their job to know when to speed up and when to slow it down. If they’re doing their job right, they’ll create a seamless evening filled with energy and fun, and there will never be a lull. And don’t be afraid to ask your DJ how they create energy and entertain during your reception. Maybe it’s getting everyone involved by teaching them a dance or maybe it’s gathering the crowd for a special presentation from the bridesmaids. However they do it, it’s important for you to feel comfortable with their style of interacting with the guests so you are happy with the flow of the evening.

4. Make sure your DJ is willing to customize their services to your wedding.

When you hire a DJ, the good ones will give you the chance to tell them what songs you like and what songs are on the DO NOT PLAY list. They then have the ability to take your style and customize a play list that matches your taste and style and keeps the evening moving along nicely. But don’t forget, the crowd will most likely pop over to the DJ table with some requests of their own, and a good DJ should also be able to take requests on the fly and incorporate them into the party! There might be times when guest requests that don’t fit into the bride and grooms play list, but talented DJ’s know how to strike the perfect balance between giving the guests what they want and still staying true to the original plan set by the newlyweds.

5. Make sure your DJ can adapt.

As much as we plan every detail of a wedding, there are always hiccups or changes that happen. It’s just part of life. Make sure your DJ is on board with being flexible and adaptable when it comes to changes. If the bride and groom are running late, he may have to entertain guests longer than anticipated and cut out other activities he had planned. There’s nothing worse than a DJ that can’t change from the plan and rushes everyone through the evening to check off his list. Instead, get a DJ that’s cool under pressure, and doesn’t mind changing plans at the last minute to keep everyone happy and having fun!

6. Make sure your DJ has more than music.

Many DJ’s offer extra bonuses on top of the standard music and MC services. Ask your DJ if they offer things like wedding lighting rentals and video screens. It’s fun to have a slide show of the newlywedded couple flashing in the background as everyone dances and celebrates. And flashing and colorful lights make it that much more fun to get down on the dance floor. If you’re looking for these extras, don’t just assume every DJ does this. Make sure these extras are included in the contract if you want them, and conversely… if you don’t want them, see what you can do to strike a deal without all the extras.

At the end of the day, it comes down to meeting your DJ in person before you hire them and making sure they are a good fit. Go through all the details and don’t be afraid to ask questions and tell them what you want. If the conversation goes well, go with your gut and you won’t be let down!
